Boat handling for beginners

If you are new to boating, we are delighted to help you with tuition and training in practical boat handling aboard your new boat. A trial run can even be arranged before you buy so you can prove to yourself you can cope! Boat handling courses leading to RYA qualifications can be arranged for both helm and crew.

Finance

We can help arrange Marine Finance at competitive rates over periods up to 10 or 15 years with many leading marine finance companies. You can generally borrow up to 80% of the sale price of a new or secondhand boat. Please see Fact Sheet 6 - Marine Finance or click here.

Insurance

Cost generally depends upon berth location and boat value. As a guide, a £15,000 river cruiser based on the River Thames would cost about £100 p.a. A £25,000 offshore cruiser based in a coastal marina would cost about £250 dependant on your experience and claims.

Survey

We recommend that you employ a qualified marine surveyor to inspect any preowned boat that you wish to buy. We maintain a list of local surveyors at each office which we are happy to let you have - "Contact us" for further details. If you decide to go ahead, surveys generally cost from £200 to £900 depending upon what you ask the surveyor to inspect and the size of the boat. The craning, cleaning and relaunching to give the surveyor access to inspect the underwater hull, costs about £250 for a 25ft boat.
